2010. No pitch deck, no market analysis — a famous blog went down, and the tooling everyone trusted turned out not to exist.
Akshat Choudhary was nowhere near WordPress. He was doing kernel hacking at Citrix, building a networking device called NetScaler. Then Coding Horror crashed — the programming blog of Jeff Atwood, founder of Stack Overflow — and it turned out Jeff Atwood had no working backup. Only cached copies of the site saved the blog.
That raised a question that wouldn't go away: if Jeff Atwood doesn't have backups, what about everyone else? Here was a real problem, sitting in plain sight, that the entire market had learned to live with.
So he left networking, learned WordPress, and built BlogVault — backups that actually restore. It was the first product. It set the pattern for every one that followed.
